In antique Rome there was a horizontal sundial at the suggestion of
emperor Augustus. Its dimension was 400 metres from east to west. The
shadow caster was an obelisk transported from Egypt to Rome.

In modern times one very large sundial is situated in Munich, Germany. In
the courtyard of the 'Deutsches Patentamt' (Patent Office of Germany) a
large hoizontal sundial covers the ground measuring about 30 times 60 metres.
