It is possible to make a sundial on any sunlit surface. A very simple 
sundial is the one on a plane parallel to the equator. On the earths equator 
this results in a sundial on a vertical plane. The shadow caster then is 
horizontal. The hour lines are homogenous spaced by 15 degrees.

On the other hand you can make a simple sundial on a base which is 
parallel to the earths axis. On the equator this is a horizontal plane. 
You can place the shadow caster in shape of a u-bow like:

  _____
  |   |
  |   |

The horizontal part then casts the shadow that you use to read the time. 
The hour lines are straight lines which are parallel.
