There is a 3rd solution: you can use the shadow of any point, e.g. de tip of
a pole. You can imagine this point as a part of the bar described by Roger
Sinnott. Using a point as a shadowpointer has one more advantage: you can
also read the declination of the sun. Knowing that the sun has only twice a
year a particular declination you can see that you more or less a date scale
added to your sundial. As a first try you can use vertical pole of ca. 2
meter. Don't forget: you have to read the sundial by locating the TIP of the
shadow, not the edge of the pole.
This type of sundial illustrates very nice when the sun is in your zenith,
when it is culminating South and when it is culminating North.
