Dear Lanora The Kilmalkedar sundial is illustrated and described in "The Book of Sun-Dials" by Mrs Alfred Gatty, enlarged edition 1900, in Chapter V - Early Irish Dials, pages 82-87. It says there its height is 3 feet 8 inches. Several Irish pillar dials are known - I list seven in my "Irish National Inventory of Historic Scientific Instruments". I understand they usually date between 800-1200 AD. Gatty says: "The old church of Kilmalkedar is assigned to the early part of the twelfth century, and the graveyard is full of imitations of the old dial, which now serves as a headstone." Perhaps your six foot one is one of these?
I'll fax the relevant pages of Gatty to you. Regards Charles Mollan (E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED])
