Picture archives of the 'Arbeitskreis Sonnenuhren'
-------------------------------------------------

The 'Arbeitskreis Sonnenuhren' (workgroup sundials in Germany) maintains
archives with all kinds of pictures of sundials. It is intended to serve
as a documentative center for someone giving a lecture as well as being
useful if an old picture is wanted to reconstruct a badly preserved
sundial.

So far the registrar, mathematician Willy Bachmann, can count more than
20.000 photographs and slides! Of course most of them show sundials in
Germany (about 15.000) but there are also about 1.200 Swiss, 1.300
Austrian, 1.000 French, 300 Italian, and hundreds of other countries of
Europe, Asia, and America.

This huge number of items is catalogued well by the aim of a computer of
course. The records are linked together with other data bases about
sundials giving more detailed information about the gnomonic properties,
locations, etc.

Nonetheless of the time to be spent into these archives, Mr. Bachmann
welcomes more contributions. Dispensible pictures of passable quality of
sundials all around the world can be sent to him. But location, name of
the photographer, and the year in which it was taken should be given.

If one is interested in obtaining copies from these archives this is of
course possible. Just write to Willy Bachmann and let him know what you
are searching for. But, please, don't forget to include an International
Request Coupon to cover postage costs.
