Dear sundial friends: I face the problem of precisely determining the declination of a vertical wall the rough declination of which in known, e.g. south-west. So I had the idea to attach a horizontal gnomon of known properties and make a list of various measurements of its shadow points versus date and time. As the geographical position of the wall is known, a computer programme can be written which calculates the same shadow points under the assumption of a certain wall declination. To find the actual wall declination I only have to vary the assumed declination (e.g. from south to west) and compare the measured and calculated results against maximum likelihood.
