Dear sundial friends:
I face the problem of precisely determining the declination of a vertical
wall the
rough declination of which in known, e.g. south-west.
So I had the idea to attach a horizontal gnomon of known properties and make
a
list of various measurements of its shadow points versus date and time.
As the geographical position of the wall is known, a computer programme can
be
written which calculates the same shadow points under the assumption of a
certain wall declination.
To find the actual wall declination I only have to vary the assumed
declination
(e.g. from south to west) and compare the measured and calculated results
against maximum likelihood.

Does anybody of our sundial friends know if such a programme already exists?
A message would be highly appreciated by
