Members of the list may be interested to know of a new book/catalogue which I received yesterday.
Sundials Australia by Margaret Folkard and John Ward - second edition March 1996 - ISBN 0 646 2222000 7 publish by Sundials Australia, 3 Bedford Street, Kensington Park, South Australia 5068. A quick review: The book has some excellant content and a small amount (not unresonable) of self promotion of the business of Sundials Australia. Basic dial theory is well covered with calculator routines for all the standard dial layouts. Brief historical accounts of some very interesting dials world wide, which I have not seen in other publications. For those of you in the North there are some fine examples of australian dials. The dials made by Folkard and Ward are of wonderful quality and will no doubt be collectors items in years to come. Chapter 9 of the book is most interesting on the problems of contrast on dials - called "Blackness and Sharpness of Shadows. A worthwhile addition to any dialists library in my view. John Hall
