I am just a beginner myself. However I have found the book
Sundials How to Know, use, and Make them by Mayall and Mayall
to be very helpful.

I am also using the following internet resources:

Sky and Telescope Magazine Web Site

Astronomy Software for Personal Computers
http://www.skypub.com/software/software.html
 DIAL.BAS Dec 87 p646 Design a vertical sundial

The above freeware program will produce coordinates for you to lay out a
vertical sundial. The narative and program description is in the Dec. 1987
Sky and Telecsope Magazine. The program is written in basic. I hadn't used
a basic program in 10 years (ever since my Commodore 64 was new). Basic
does have its quirks.

In order to design a vertical sundial you need to know the declination of
the dial. I plan to use the method outlined in the Dec 1987 Sky and
Telescope Magazine. In order to do this you need to know the azimuth of the
sun at a particular time. I plan to use the MYSTAR program for determining
the azimuth.

MSDOS Senior Astronomy Shareware

http://www.gu.edu.au/aeres/edsw/d-astron.htm
MYSTAR.ZIP
Shows the position of sun & planets from anywhere (83k)

This is a shareware program that you can download from this site.

You need to unzip it (use pkunzip to expand the program). The pkunzip
program that I used, I downloaded from AOL. I am sure that it can be found
many other places as well

Happy dialing,

Ed
