>Does any one know if there is an english translation of Ptolemy's "On the
>Analemma"? My source indicates that William of Moerbeke translated it into
>Latin about 1269.
If it is any help at all, in O. Neugebauer's book, _The Exact Sciences
in Antiquity_ from Dover, he says in the Notes on page 226 regarding
literature on the "Analemma", that Ptolemy's treatise is published
by Heiberg in Ptolemaeus, Opera II, p. 189-223 (1907). For discussion
of the method, he refers to Drecker's _Theorie der Sonnenuhren_ and
other German references.
Neugebauer discusses the method ("What follows is taken from Ptolemy's
very elegant treatment of the subject") with suitable diagrams in
his section 87 (pp. 214-218).
Elsewhere, he mentions this 1907 volume of writings (I presume) further:
"Ptolemy's other works are slowly being published. One volume appeared
in 1907, containing, among others, important writings on the theory
of sun dials and on stereographic projection which is basis of the
famous astrolabe, one of the most important instruments of medieval
astronomy."
Neugebauer's book was written in 1957 (Second Edition), so this
information is somewhat dated.
