The original story was detailed in National Geographic in 1988 (Sept?), 
but the 1990 Jan issue carried an article showing that other evidence 
confirms that Peary indeed came as close to the North Pole as he had 
claimed.  This includes soundings of the sea bottom depth by Peary and 
measurements of expedition photographs.
