Dear Mr. Irwin and friends of SUNDIALS,

My name is Jose San Antonio and I live in Madrid (SPAIN). Last saturday
I've read Mr. Irwin message requesting information about the sundial of
the Spanish village of Almaraz, located southwest Spain in the province
of Caceres.
This morning I've been talking with a person of the City Hall of Almaraz
and here are some news (but they are bad news): the sundial does not
exist today, but it was there some years ago in the tower of the City
Hall. It was a vertical sundial. What happened to the sundial? The City
Hall of Almaraz suffered a fire in 1955; it seems that the building was
so deteriorated that in the reconstruction some walls had to be replaced
by new ones. And one of this walls was the one that holded the sundial
in the tower.
The person at the City Hall of Almaraz said that they do not have any
information about the sundial in their archives. I gived him my phone #
and asked him to try to find out if anybody keeps a picture or a drawing
or other information about the sundial.
I'll be posting any news regarding this matter.
I think it could be helpful if you ask your library user where he knew
about the sundial of Almaraz, maybe it can help me track some additional
information.
....
Surprise!!
While writing this message the Mayor of Almaraz called me back and said
that he is very interested in placing a new sundial in the wall of the
tower, and if it can be a reproduction of the one that was burned, the
better. He said he is going to make his best in finding any information.

I'll keep in touch...
Best regards,
