You may want to take a look at the book 'Astronomical Algorithms' by Jean Meeus (Willman-Bell). Beside algorithms for the calculation of solstices and equinoxes you'll find a wealth of other interesting things like moon phases, azimuth and altitude of the sun and so on. A chapter about the calculation of sundials is included as well. - Daniel Roth
