I must of missed the part of the perpendicular gnomon.  Two other suggestions 
though. 

One, Have the needle extend through the ball and use that as the pointer.

Two, Cut deep spherical grooves around the ball perpendicular to each other 
(North,South and East 
West).

I'm fresh out of ideas now.
