Hello All:
Don't worry, I won't announce the SGS of the
month every month unless the dial new and interesting, but I thought you
would like to see the new Shuttleworth stained glass sundial since we discussed
it here a few weeks ago. If you recall my earlier posting on it, I
was trying to find out more about it and its maker. It's the Sundial of
the Month for March, and it's on the SGS Home page at: www.stainedglasssundials.com
I've been in contact with Mr. Shuttleworth and he sent me detailed info and
several good photos of it. (see the Image Archive, SGS 21st
century)
I didn't know whether to classify it as a stained
glass sundial or as etched glass because it is composed of both.
Note the artistic and practical technique that Mr. Shuttleworth used to
denote the quarter hour time divisions: He alternated stained glass
that was etched with stained glass that wasn't. But I ended up putting it
in the stained glass section of the website. Also note that he used the
gnomon support technique that I used on my Oxford stained glass dial that
employs a metal disk embedded within the panel (This keeps the glass from
cracking where the gnomon is attached).
Mr. Shuttleworth is a glass artisan and not a
member of any sundial society.
