Hello All,

In North America there are few such dials. The only one I know of off hand
is Mac Oglesby's "time remaining to sunset" dial at Moore's Airfield. This
uses reverse Italian hours to show the time available for pilots using
Visual Flying Rules. See NASS Compendium 12-1.
Alas, the airfield was recently sold and the new owners have no plans
to continue the land as an airport. The planes are all gone from the
hanger, to be replaced by farming equipment. The runway will be
plowed and return to agricultural use, at least for now. The demand
for land increases (and they're not making and more of it around
here), so the price goes up to the point where it needs be developed.
The airfield came close to being sold for a rubbish landfill a few
years back. I guess a group of houses is a more dignified end than a
dump, but I'll miss the grass runway, affectionately called
"Dummerston International."
The 4 x 8 foot "Hours to Sunset" dial remains on the end of the
hanger, but who knows for how long? It's not possible for me to
relocate it, so it may someday join the long, sad list of sundials
which once were, but are no longer.
Best wishes,
Mac Oglesby
P.S. I have a medium-size hours til sunset dial on our house in
Brattleboro, Vermont and I recently installed two other small such
dials in the area. As I get older, my dials get smaller. ;-)
