Hi Reinhold:

I’m sure you are correct in that there are many PWS in the rest of Europe and Japan that we haven’t discovered.  But the ones on the website are mostly from Austria, France and Italy.  To find many of these sundials I went to Italian and French websites and just clicked around.  I suspect I will find more when I go to websites in German, Spanish, and other languages.  I have no idea which country has the most PWS.  But my guess is Italy.

There are many PWS that are very plane, simple, uninteresting or horribly damaged.  We will not post photos of them and will only concentrate on the most beautiful or most interesting.  We have to draw the line somewhere.  We have no intention of posting 20,000 sundials!  We may limit it to the top 500 or so.

When I catch my breath, I’ll start googling in different languages and will check out the website of other foreign sundial societies.

John

Dear John,

“… They are almost all from Italy, France, Austria.”

I think I have to improve your knowledge a little bit:

In Germany there are about 12000 registered sundials (Probably more, our SML-Webmaster Daniel Roth knows the exact number) – registered with photos and exact description. How many of them are painted on walls??

Don’t forget the other important countries like The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Czech Republic, and don’t forget Poland, Switzerland, Hungaria, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Russia etc. etc. Don’t forget Mexico!

By the way: In Japan there also were no sundials on walls in the past, but they have started with them some years ago. So why don’t you contact the Japan Sundial Society, as you are in a similar situation…

Good luck for many US-American wall-sundials!

Hi Roger (cc Sundial List & Alain):

I’m so glad you wrote back, we have much to discuss.  Hope you don’t mind me c.cing the Sundial List, but they can learn from your letter below.

First I’m so pleased that people are astounded as I am by the beauty of some of these painted wall sundials. Do you know that I can’t find more than five of these in the United States?  I don’t think we have any from Canada.  And there is only a couple from Great Britain.  What a shame!  They are almost all from Italy, France, Austria.  I hope you guys will be inspired to make some.  You could design them and if you aren’t an artist, you could hire a local artist who does murals (a muralist).  The art department at your local university would be a good place to find an artist to make your sundial.  Or try finding a sign painter in your phone directory.  As far as materials go, these are the least expensive sundials to fabricate!  The poor man’s sundial.  You only have to pay for the paint, brushes and gnomon.  So go ahead you guys and give it a try.

You wrote (and others must be thinking the same thing):

I understand where you are coming from. "Here are the images; enjoy and be inspired by the art form".  But I am still frustrated by the bare image and would very much like to know more: Who created the dial? Where is it? What is the context? This is what I am really interested in. The Zarbula and Timelines presentations are examples of where I am coming from. I guess this is why I enjoy travel, both real and virtual.

My answer:

I know many people will feel frustrated in that we have not included detailed information on each sundial. It frustrates me a little too.  But you must understand that that task would be enormous.  I have neither the time nor the patience to do the required investigatigations.  I’m a little burnt out from all the work I did and am still doing on the Stained Glass Sundial website.  You just can’t imagine how much work it is to investigate all these sundials and then post the info.  I’m just not “up to it” now.  I can’t even speak Italian or French!  I’m also sorry some photographers might get mifted that we did not mention their names. But in my opinion any photos I find googling on the internet are free game and I will copy them.  So sue me!  (not you Roger, I’m just venting.)  People shouldn’t put photos on the internet and expect them to remain private.  At least I’m treating all photos and people equally by not giving any info on any of them.  So far, nobody has complained.

My answer:

We’re only posting one photo of each dial, so can I keep the photo I have or do you really want me to delete it?  I saw the other photo of it and it is very deteriorated.

Darn!  That’s a great photo.  I’d forgotten about it till you mentioned it.  It got a lot of laughs at the NASS conference.  Can you get permission for us to use it?  I’ll check out the webpage you mentioned and get back to you.

Hello John , Dave and Alain,

I have no problem with your use of my pictures in the Painted Wall Sundial image archive. I see that many of our Zarbula's  are already up there. (53 to 76)*. My more recent "Timelines"** presentation has many more useful images, over 30, (Prague 1,2,9 etc) My personal travel logs have even more.(Austria 30, 33, 127 etc). Generally I ask for attribution but I see that none of your images have information on who, where, when, why, how. The important attribution is to the creative artist and I see that you do not do this either. The name of the tourist like me who took the picture is not usually important. Things can be different with professional photographers. Great images are creative works of art. Some painters have hang-ups about the publication of images of their work. I hear Remy Potey  (35, 37, 47 etc) is one. Owners of dials often object to trespassing photographers. There are many hazards out there. "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead."

I understand where you are coming from. "Here are the images; enjoy and be inspired by the art form".  But I am still frustrated by the bare image and would very much like to know more: Who created the dial? Where is it? * Some of these are Alain's. (57,60, etc). I cannot give permission for him but perhaps half the slides in the presentation were his photos or creations.

Regards,

Roger

Hello Roger & Bonjour Alain:

This morning I have been studying and enjoying your wonderful PowerPoint presentation on the Zarbula sundials that you two made for the 2005 NASS conference. I used the CD that Roger sent me.  There are many good photos there that we do not have in our Image Archive at http://www.advanceassociates.com/WallDial/PWS_Images.html

I’m hoping that you will give us your permission to use some of the photos from your presentation.  (I have copied them from PowerPoint so there is no need to email me anything)

Please let me know if it is ok.

Thanks & merci!

John

p.s. Alain- I have two different email addresses for your email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]  and  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Which one is best?
