I must be losing my memory. I had completely forgotten about the Andrewes
longitudinal dials described in the January '07 Smithsonian Magazine until
Hal & Fred reminded me.

The mystery is that the Andrewes dials shown in the Smithsonian article are
all small versions for pedestals. But supposedly, the one at Burghley House
is 132 ft. (I assume that this means that the face is 132 ft in diameter).
So I wonder if it is a giant version of one of his dials?

I just reread the article and it does not mention one at Burghley.

John,

Andrews' "Longitude" sundial was the feature of a recent - I don't have my
copy handy - article in the "Smithsonian". It is described therein along
with photographs. Andrews is also the editor of "The Quest for Longitude",
a 1993 symposium on the subject.
