"J Davis fecit" is correct and in a long and venerable tradition.   
For "commission" I'd suggest either "X mandatum dedit" or, better, "X  
mandatum detulit."  Both are classical, but to me the latter has a  
nicer "feel" to it.  (X, of course, is the client's name in the  
nominative case.)
