dear Ricardo
I read with interest your message and I have a question for you. I was in
Açores (Azores) on 2006 and 2007 for my summer holidays. Azores are 9
portuguese islands in the middle of the Northern Atlantic and I visited 8 of
them (Santa Maria is left). Obviously I looked for sundials and I found two on
the island of Terceira.
I don't speak portuguese but during my staying there I took advantage of the
similarity of portuguese and italian languages for my search. Unfortunately I
didn't find any gnomonist down there, then I wrote some e-mails in english to
astronomic associations in Portugal and Madeira but nobody answered me.
I should like to know if any gnomonist has info about sundials of Azores and I
am asking myself if your initiative may help me.
Azores are very interesting, not only for holidays. On the islands there are
settlements founded almost 50 years before Colombo 'discovered' America, some
old monasteries, any of Jesuits, any abandoned, other trasformed in museum like
in Angra where in the cloister I found a stone dial of 1798. I'm quite sure
there should be other dials then those two I discovered and sooner or later
I'll came back there.
I'm not able to write portuguese so, if you can help me, I have this question
for your blog.
If someone wish contact me for info about sundials in Azores I can answer in
italian or english, and in french with the help of my wife
ciao Fabio
