Dear friends,
We are pleased to inform you that on January 20, at 21:20 hours (local
time in Barcelona) , the expedition Pol Sud Sense Límits Obra Social "la
Caixa" reached its goal: the geographic South Pole! The joy was immense.
We never doubted that it would succeed, but the bad weather which
retained the expedition more than four days in Punta Arenas, brought the
concern that the weather conditions could bring the strongest
impediments in the future. However, the expedition members were anxious
to recover this lost time and even arrived at their destination ahead of
schedule.

The members of the expedition were received at the U.S. base
Amundsen-Scott Station, when it was officially handled the sundial of
the Societat Catalana de Gnomònica to the head of the base and being
other senior members present, as commemorative item of their arrival at
the South Pole. The head of the U.S. base thanked the gesture and begged
the members of the expedition to sign a memorandum of this present , in
which the name of the sundial (SUSIE - Sundial on the Southernmost Ices
on Earth) and their authors (Vilà, I., Farré, E., Girbau, J., Ventura,
J.)are mentioned. From this document the personnel of the base will make
a brass plate, full color, to be kept beside the sundial. The sundial
will be kept indoors in this huge station to protect it from the
permanent snowstorms; nevertheless it will be eventually used outdoors.
