   I think, perhaps, that it was mentioned here, on the list.  At least: my
recollection is that the reference was to a dial by William Andrewes.  It was
mentioned in an article by the science writer Dava Sobel "The Shadow Knows" in
the _Smithsonian_ magazine for January 2007 (pp. 88-95).
