Sorry folks, I think it was me that started this. When I printed some
business cards describing what I do, I checked in the BSS Sundial Glossary
(2000 edition) how it was spelt for fear of making a mistake. It is edited
by John Davis and states: "diallist {dialist}, one who designs or makes
dials." The {} indicating alternative spelling to the preferred one.

Without wishing to extend the dialist/diallist controversy beyond what
it is worth may I just add that a near parallel to this word is offered
in the Shorter Oxford as both "medallist" and "medalist". Clearly, as in
most English spellings, the rules are not exact. We would be better with
Esperanto!
