I doubt they used an analemmatic dial, they did however use the astro compass. I have 5 of them, plus the RAF handbook of navigation as well as the equipment descriptions of all RAF navigation instruments.
My website has an astro compass page, check the SOFTWARE section of my main page. It has a small pic of the astrocompass, and a link to a sub page for the astro compass. The main spreadsheet has a very nice astrocompass worksheet for any latitude, longitude, and julian day that you may care to choose. And the spreadsheets are fine tuned for Excel as well as Open Office. Southern hemisphere needs some reversals. No diallist should be without an astrocompass. They are often on ebay for around $40 usd.
