Hi,

The proper way to do this is depicted in the title plate of Philip van
Lansbergen's description of the horary quadrant, online on Google Books

Subject: Very early equal-hours quadrant discovered

Dear John

Thank you for the news - this is a fine discovery.

Frankly speaking I cannot imagine looking directly into the Sun without loosing
my sight. Even through these two tiny pine-holes. Whouldn't it be easier and of
cource more healthy to hold one's hand near the lower hole (I don't know the
right term for these) and find a position when one gets a single spot of lite
on it? Well, perhaps not easier but at least you still have eyes to check the
time. I must confess: I have never tried to figure out how quadrants work and
thus the idea of using them as sundials is quite new to me.
