Dear All,
Have you ever coveted a Tony Moss sundial?
Well, if you live in British Latitudes, you
can now have one for little more than the
cost of printing out a single sheet of paper...
In the interests of education and through
Tony's own generosity, the British Sundial
Society now offers:
The BSS Horizontal Sundial
Visit:
http://sundialsoc.org.uk/the-bss-horizontal-sundial/
and you will see an illustration of
what is on offer.
The page is written for novices and
subscribers to this list may skip
the details. Simply click the link
to Latitude Finder and key your
latitude into the Latitude box.
There is no need to give a longitude.
Click Go to lat[/long] and then
click Get dial PDF.
Your dial will be downloaded.
A simple dial made from thick cardboard
is a possibility but the gnomon must be
close to 6mm thick to work correctly.
For a more durable version, 6mm thick MDF
is recommended.
If you want a really up-market version,
and I have a client who has enquired
about this, then you can send the PDF
off to as suitable supplier who can
fabricate the dial in phosphor bronze.
Tony acknowledges inspiration from
Bob Kellogg's coverage of the USA in a
series of pre-designed horizontal dials
covering the USA. Tony has settled on
British latitudes in the range 50 to 56
degrees north and has dials at intervals
of one-tenth of a degree.
The coverage extends to selected latitudes
in Scotland [still part of the U.K.!] and
there is also a map to show extensive
European coverage too.
Have fun!
Frank King
