Pity, dear Dan, you did not check www.ta-dip.de before you went to Switzerland!
There is a little picture about the window of that charming sundial shop in Basel at my little Swiss sundial link, which was founded and built up by the great gnomonist Robert FELIX +. There is also a unique story about "Basler Uhr" - how they gradually adjusted the clocks... to find at: http://www.ta-dip.de/sonnenuhren/sonnenuhren-von-freunden/freunde-aus-aller-welt/s-c-h-w-e-i-z.html Another nice picture of the shop window is available at my Greek link in full size at the link: http://www.ta-dip.de/sonnenuhren/sonnenuhren-aus-nah-und-fern/sonnenuhren-aus-griechenland.html The picture-size unfortunately is too big for the limited mailing list KB... Mai 1998 in Basel vor dem Schaufenster des Sonnenuhrenladens von Robert Felix im Gerbergäßlein And you could have found interesting information about sundials in Switzerland at my well composed Links - Link! http://www.ta-dip.de/links.html Ciao! Reinhold Hey Group! During my trip abroad I found an interesting natural sundial near Interlaken (Switzerland) and thought I'd share it. It turns out that in the Alps there are many mountain peaks called Mittagshorn or Mittaghorn, "Mittag" being the German word for "midday" or "noon". Long before mechanical clocks were invented, mountains acted as sundials for the inhabitants of alpine highlands. The sun either appeared directly above the Mittagshorn peaks or disappeared behind them in winter turning them into gigantic noon marks. Of course, it all depended on your location. My photo was made from the top of Interlaken's Harder Kulm. For German readers an interesting article about another Mittagshorn (this time in Saas Grund) is to be found in the Bianco Winter 2009/2010 issue (page 100): http://issuu.com/spot/docs/bianco_winter2009-10 As a sidenote, I've now learned that the author of that article (Timm Delfs) has probably the only shop specialized in sundials in the whole of Europe. It's located in Basel and although my flight was to and from Basel, I didn't know about the shop until I got home. Such a pity! Well, perhaps there will be a next time. Wondering if Timm's on the mailing list? Cheers, Dan Uza Romania * ** *** **** ***** ****** ******* Reinhold R.
