My name is Luigi Ghia and I am the managing editor of Orologi Solari.

I want to thank all the dialists that have expressed on this list or
personally their appreciation for the last issue of the magazine. We are
proud to see that this Italian work is worldwide considered and please be
sure that we are committed to do our best for the next issues too.

I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to also provide an
answer to Larry McDavid, Richard Mallett and David Patte.

I wonder how you can neglect a smart and powerful app for Android called
“Sol Et Umbra” that was developed by the Italian dialist Gian Casalegno .

It has been mentioned on this list in the past and an article appeared on
“The Compendium” 20-2 June 2013. A short review can also be found on the
BSS site http://sundialsoc.org.uk/old/apps.php .

Since then the app has grown and it has now several features that I believe
can be very useful to dialists:
- GPS or manual positioning
- Google map access for location finding
- NTP reading for accurate time indication
- complete sun ephemerides
- actual time in italic, babilonic, temporal hours
- Islamic prayer times
- Qibla direction
- real time sundial drawing for the actual place and the actual device
orientation
- real time lighting conditions for the actual place and the actual device
orientation
- augmented reality display of the sun path overlapping the camera image

It is available from Google Play Store and it’s worth remembering that it
has an English interface too.

Hope you will experiment it.

My best regards.

Luigi Ghia
