After a long time I finally finished a book dealing with *“Formule e metodi per lo studio delle meridiane piane “*
*"**Formulae** and methods for the study of flat sundials - Characteristics, descriptions and calculation of common and less known sundials”* The book is written in Italian language and is the complete redesign of an essay on the same topic I wrote in 1996. Since then much has changed, especially for the fact that many of these things have become almost "useless" because today the dialist can find in Internet very valid programs and websites full of excellent explanations accompanied by beautiful images that cannot appear in a single printed book. Nevertheless I decided to publish this new version of my text that, from the initial 250 pages, has become, with the addition of many new arguments, of 480. The book contains some notes and articles about the basic relationships and the formulae used in the mathematical geometric study of flat sundials with the purpose of describing the methods to approach this argument. It is not however a new general text on sundials but my wish is that it be considered as a manual for the designer, a reference book, addressed to those who are curious and are not satisfied with the results of a PC program, but want to know and verify "what's behind." For reason of space I have omitted many geometrical methods while I have included some topics and unusual types of sundials that are never explained in textbooks. For example the search of the unknown elements in incomplete or to restore sundials; many methods to find the declination and the inclination of a plane; the effects of refraction on sundials; etc. Sundials with a mirror (reflection s.) ; sundials in darkrooms and analemmatic; azimuthal sundials and those with sidereal hours; bifilar s. and some types of interactive s. ; hour plane sundials; those with Ptolemaic coordinates; the effect of a refractive plate on a s. ; etc. Size 24x17cm, 480 pages black/white glossy paper, soft cover, more than 500 original figures and diagrams many numerical examples. The volume is available at major bookstores (as Amazon.com) using the ISBN 9788891179364 . Cost 30€ For those who are interested I attached a PDF file with the index of the book G_Ferrari-Formulae_Index .pdf A file with some pages of the book is in : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6616660/G_Ferrari-Formule_alcune%20pagine.pdf My best wishes Gianni Ferrari P.S.
