I would have thought it should be very simple and not a freak. As long as the sides of the post are parallel to the paving slabs and the sun is exactly south (or north if you are in the southern hemisphere), at twice a year this should be the result. The dates would depend on the height of the post. Although, I think it should work even if it isn’t due south, just when the sun is directly behind the post and the right height.
