In a ancient tradition we organize a table with 7 things which their name start with "S" letter in Persian.
The name is "7 sin". The Watch in Farsi named "Sa' at" and if you look carefully we have garlic which in Persian named " sir", and a flower we named "Sonbol" and money we named " seke" and a food with floor named" samanoo" and. ... .
So, any things is a symbol for a good wishes for new year.
For example gold money for richness in new year!
Also we put water and fish. Water is a symbol for light and fish for living.
Also we put a holy Quran and adults save some money within it's pages and when year is new presents to family and friends.
I hope I could express all rightly.

What a nice email. I had no idea of Nowruz, and that Iranians like Chinese have a different New Year to us in the West. At least there is an astronomical basis for their year.
However, with my tongue firmly in my cheek, I have to point out that the image contains an alarm clock in the right foreground, rather than a sundial ;-). I realise that it is off-topic, but do you have any idea about the significance of the two cats in the image?
