Title: Re: A successful restoration of a 533 years old sundial in Zerbst!

Caro Mario!

Thank you so much for your very useful comment! You are completely right! This Mailinglist is so good for clearing details!
And it is good I published so many pictures about the previous status!

In my Zerbst- sundial link I had also inserted a comment of the in Germany famous Ernst Zinner in which he mentions a different writing style between the text-passage of the left side and the numbers used at the sundial:

And I had been a bit too rashly with my comment -

So it might well be that the sundial is a bit younger than the inscription of 1484. But why to wait 30 years with the creation of the sundial??

Special thanks to Luis from Spain to have opened this discussion!

Reinhold

I agree, In "its possible added volute" I meant later in time to the original, I don't think they are there since the original making. Could not trace volutes in the lateral written date. As I said, congratulations for a job well done.

No Reinhold and Luis, the volute are original. Look at the tird image of the article you linked in your email (the volutes are visible also in other photos) that is the photo before restoration. Go also to see the old photo numbered NK 12 in the article, you can see the volutes also there. The restorers made a very good work.

Dear Luis,

I agree with you! The restorer obviously has added these lines on the very last day of her restoration work. I did not see these traces in the stone before, even I had often been alone on the scaffold and very close to the sundial and also taken so many photos at all light-situations. The restorer should have better taken more care for the hour-lines for example! ...

Kind regards, Reinhold
