Subj: For The Dialist that has it all (almost)

Hi all,

I just got this add for sundial cuff links from a group of “rapid printing”
business members called “Shapeways”. I’ve used one of them before and the
service and parts were very good. The process is still a little expensive
for life size sundials but the technology is advancing rapidly lately and
someday soon you will be able to create all of your wildest dreams. This
process is great if you cannot afford 5 years of the Kings craftsmen working on
your projects. This time they are making nice sundial cuff links in
various metals. I just purchased a bronze pair ($26) to go with my fairly
old Fossil Sundial watch. These are lots of fun to initiate sundial
discussions with people.

Shapeways members will actually print a solid design in a variety of metals
or many of the older plastics. The process is getting more sophisticated
and now they can laser sinter, 30 micron layers of fine metal powder into an
object. In the process, a fine layer of powder is scraped across a
platform and then in a flash, a laser ‘prints’ or fuses all desired areas into
solid metal. Then the table drops down another 30 microns, or whatever
fineness they are using, and another layer is added... over and over. You
can print intricate, functional parts that have fine details inside, outside,
on
Mobius strips or any wild shape you can imagine, or more properly, develop a
solid model for. Time to get into a good design program like SolidWorks or
other. This is one of the new futures!
