Theay are gnomonically uncorrect, I know, but they were intended as sundials (horologium) for at list 1000 year by all people living in Europe and Christian Middle East. That kind of pattern came fron antiquity: Egiptians made portable sundials so divided in a semycircle and Romans too (but fixed), and they were not decorative, they were made for reckoning time.
