Hi sundialists,

as Jägerstätter has been born 50 km West of my home town and the mentioned
military base in Enns is 50 km East I will try to figure it out.

But:

A) As I followed the description most of the film has been shot in South
Tyrol/North Italy and not in the Austrian Alps (After the First World War Tyrol
has been separated to three parts: North (Center Innsbruck), East (Center
Lienz) – both Austria, and South (Center Bozen) - Italy. The European Alps
reach starting East from nearly Vienna, cross most of Austria/North Italy, go
further across Switzerland and part of East/South France. Lots of beautiful
places by the way!

B) Secondly Jägerstätter worked at a mine in Styria/Austria but lived most
of his life in in the whole flat Innviertel/Upper Austria. The Austrian Alps
are 50 km South. So the film identifies more a random place but likely tries to
figure out the idea of Jägerstätter.

Within the description of the movie I found a hint to a castle in South Tyrol
with a sundial – Velthurns Castle:

I did not see the film yet but could this be the solution?

Betreff: A dial in the movie "A Hidden Life" (2019)

Happy New 2020, Friends:

In the new film "A Hidden Life" (2019, Director: Terrence Malik),
a large wall sundial appears in the backdrop of a scene at about 100 minutes
into the film. My question is: can anyone identify where this scene was shot?

The film is not a standard feature film and not for everyone’s
taste — 3 hours long, slow-paced, beautiful cinematography of the Austrian
Alps, raising many moral conundrums, simultaneously joyful and heart-wrenching.
It tells the story of the Austrian peasant farmer Franz Jägerstätter (read
about him and the film on Wikipedia), who refused to sign a loyalty oath to
Hitler, which eventually led to his execution in 1943.

The scene with the sundial takes place at a military base in Enns
(Austria) but of course it could have been shot somewhere else. I suspect that
one of our Austrian diallists may recognize the dial. Let us know!

                                               Cheers,
