Dear All, A couple of days my attention was attracted by an interesting historic fresco sundial, offered by Aste Bolafi auction house on 22 September sale: https://astebolaffi.it/it/lot/812/599/detail
I asked an auctioneer for additional images, which You can download from link below: https://we.tl/t-EufvA27J4U (Don't be affraid to download - its virus free, sundial content only) The sundial looks to be a fresco - or plaster painted - horizontal dial. The unusual not weather-proof technique used for its construction, the lack of a gnomon (with a delineation center marked only), and orientation of the axis of the dial slightly turned in relation to the borders all suggest that it was rather model for a larger monumental dial. The color schemes of the fresco dial correspond well with the colours of marbles used in construction of historic meridian lines - see San Petronio in Bologna and Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome. Thus it seems to be very rare finding highlighting the historic construction workshop. The dial, based on the form of numerals, looks to be earlier than 18th century, which is stated by the auction house. I report it here hoping it will not finish as a coffee table in bourgeois living room ! It looks to be large and I presume fragile piece - so l rather suggest local based Italian gnomonists interest in this sale ! regards, Maciej Lose --------------------------------------------------- https://lists.uni-koeln.de/mailman/listinfo/sundial
