Hi,
In Gian Casalengo's recent alert to the contents of the current number
of /Orologi Solari/, one of the articles is: 5. - "A hat for the sun (A
visual tour of Europe hatsundials)" by Manuel Pizarro. I was fascinated
and a bit of searching took me to Alexandre Vial's /Théorie du cadran à
chapeau/ (Theory of the Hat Sundial) from 2009. Vial mentions that an
early account was given by Jacques Ozanam in his /Récréations
mathématiques/. Problem 28 is to "Describe a Dial on the convex surface
of a cylinder perpendicular to the horizon, & motionless" (/décrire un
cadran sur la surface convexe d’un cylindre perpendiculaire à l’horizon,
et immobile/). Problem 28 turns out to be in the second (1778) edition
of the Récréations. I was able to find a scanned copy of that edition
done by Google. But when it was being scanned, the plates/ planches
crucial to following Ozanam's description were not unfolded and so
Figures 27 and 28 are not visible.
Hence this message: is anyone on the List able to find and/or scan these
missing plates and figures?
Many thanks,
Peter
