Dear All,Dear All, Welcome to the first day of Year 231 by the French Republican Calendar.
Proud owners of the English or Italian Editions published by Fabio Savian will know that the front cover depicts the original Year III Calendar. This image of the original engraving is in the public domain. You can all see it by visiting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Republican_calendar If you download the full resolution image (11.7MB) you can explore the details. The first item to explore is the sundial almost in the middle of the engraving. Notice that the midday line is labelled 5 and the 6-6 line is now the 2.5 - 7.5 line. This dial is depicting French Revolutionary Hours BUT... If you zoom in more closely you will see that there is a palimpsest. This drawing has been superimposed on an older sundial where the midday line is labelled 12. This is one of many examples in the engraving alluding to casting off the old ways and introducing new ways. It is worth reading all the writing which is in very simple French! Enjoy your day. Enjoy Year 231.
