Dear friends, a new issue of the Italian magazine Orologi Solari is available for download from the usual site http://www.orologisolari.eu/.
Here is the list of articles together with a short abstract: 1. - "The meridian line of the Stock Exchange Building in Trieste: an (easily) solvable problem" by Paolo Albèri Auber The meridian line of the Stock Exchange Building (Trieste 1820) presents a problem: the capital of a column blocks the sun's rays in a period of several days close to the winter solstice. The capital should be truncated in one corner: thus, the problem would be radically solved and the meridian line could function all year long. 2. - "Italic hour sundials: how did they draw them?" by Riccardo Anselmi Hypotheses are put forward on the method followed and on the equipment used (in particular the equatorial circle with alidade) by the gnomonists of the past to trace italian hour sundials, without having to resort to calculations. 3. - "The italic hour sundial of Aymavilles castle" by Riccardo Anselmi, Amato Verthuy The article describes the italic hour sundial once visible on the S-E façade of the Aymavilles castle (AO), the only dial of this kind in the Valle d’Aosta. Today the dial is covered in whitewash, but its appearance is documented in an old photograph; it is therefore hoped that a restoration will be carried out. 4. - "The sundial in the square Girolamo Segato in Sospirolo (BL)" by Giuseppe De Donà The author tells us about the large sundial built in the main square of Sospirolo (BL), the method he used to define the tracing, its characteristics, the calculations and tests carried out to reposition the gnomon in case of any accidental displacements. 5. - "Quid umbra ?" by Massimo Goretti A semi-serious and messy reflection on a dark and mysterious theme: the shadow. On a sundial the fundamental and indispensable constituent is represented by the shadow: this transforms a purely decorative element into something alive, source of information, history and culture. 6. - "Jean Picard" by Michele T. Mazzucato Jean Picard (1620-1682) with his work “Mesure de la Terre” (1671) marks the birth of modern geodesy. Even his activity as a gnomonist, although relatively modest, is not negligible, both for some of his achievements and for a short treatise on the subject, in which he claims that in the design of a sundial, calculation is better than graphical methods. 7. - "Project for the restoration of the sundial of Palazzo Tondù in Parma" by Renzo Righi The study of a sundial on the façade of Palazzo Tondù in San Lorenzo’s square in Parma is described, preliminary to the project for its recovery and restoration, to return to the city a precious gnomonic work, witness to its history. 8. - "First book of the ASTROLABIUM by Christopher Clavius - 1594 edition" (Short contribution) by Alessandro Gunella The author presents his translation of the first of the three books on the ASTROLABIUM by Christopher Clavius, after having presented in n. 32 a summary of the essential parts of the entire work. Hope you will enjoy the reading, although in Italian only. Regards. Gian
