Maybe it has something to do with a corrupted Xservers or Xconfig file.
Have a look at Solaris.3.1.beta_install.pdf page 45.
"To Determine the Integrity of the Configuration Files"

The symptom "When they are corrupt, the dtlogin daemon cannot start the
Xsun server properly"
might fit your problem description. The procedure on how to solve it is
described on page 46-47.
