Ralf,
This is covered by a thread called MS Cals. The fact that you are using
Sun Ray and RDesktop does nothing to change your CAL needs.
Here is the MS FAQ.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/priclicfaq.mspx
--snip--
All users need a MS Windows CAL. This CAL covers you for
authentication, file/print, etc.
From a Terminal Services Standpoint it depends on what version of
Windows Server you are running.
For Windows 2000, every device that connects to the Terminal Server
needs a TS Device CAL.
For Windows 2003, MS introduced a new type a TS CAL, A TS User CAL.
So the rule of thumb if you are using Windows 2003 is that if you have
more devices than users, get TS User CAL's. If you have more users than
Devices, get TS Device CAL's.
From there it depends on the apps you are running to determine what
other CAL's are needed. (Exchange, SQL Server, etc).

Can someone please tell me if there is a FAQ or a
document that explains
what MS licenses are needed for a Sun Ray server
running Solaris 9 with
50 users?
We would like to find out what licenses are needed to
be in legal compliance
even if RDesktop works without the licenses.
If there is no FAQ, could someone please explain the
following:
Do we need one license per Sun Ray server that would
cover all 50 users?
Do we need one license per user?
Is a Terminal Server CAL (Client Access License) or a
Windows Server CAL needed for a Sun Ray?
Is the license entered into the Sun Ray server, or do
we just need a piece of paper to be in legal
compliance?
What type of license and how many licenses are needed
on a Windows Server
side?
Thanks.
