We are very very early in this process, and actually should be brining Sun in to talk about it soon.

The bottom line is that we would be looking at replacing 30,000 PCs in our branch network, running primarily Windows based applications through Citrix (as we have an extensive Citrix infrastructure today that could be extended) or Tarantella (if the opportunity is compelling). Applications that could be replaced by Java or other options would be considered.

As i stated, these are for our branch network, so these users are considered "task workers," with a limited set of tools they use on a regular basis (Web browsing/Intranet, 3270 term emulation, etc.). The branch network is conditioned to and expects "always on" functionality, so the "bubba with a backhoe" scenario holds a particular terror in any consideration of a network-only solution. There is already a server based architecture in each branch to alleviate this so they can work off-tether for limited periods of time.

These branches are in locations from Connecticut to Key West, FL and west into Texas. So I am asking if there are any real-world implementations that approach this size and scope, with something approaching the transactional nature of a financial institution.

And yes, my real name is George Washington :)
