We filed an RFE on this recently. Strangely enough, its been the biggest issue new users have with the Sun Rays. Fixing this would make life much easier for our help desk.

New users to our Sun Rays are confused that there are no '****' echoed when they type in their passwords. They think that the system is not letting them enter a password.

Is there some way to enable the echoing of the '****'?

There's no way to have the dtlogin greeter provide any visual feedback during password entry. This is deliberate, it makes it harder for an intruder to shoulder-surf his way into someone's account. It's the same logic as not echoing anything at a traditional character login password prompt like telnet/rlogin/ssh.

You could file an RFE asking for this to be changed. There've been a couple
of RFE's in the past that have been denied, but the desktop group seems more amenable to this kind of "ease of use" enhancement these days.

The Sun Ray NSCM greeter takes a middle position, it echoes a space when a password character is entered. This gives some feedback (the cursor moves slightly) without blatantly giving away the number of characters that have been typed.
