I haven't used the blastwave KDE (I compile it myself here) but there
are things you can do to decrease the resources KDE uses.

Here are some links for you:

http://www.kde.org/areas/sysadmin/

You especially want to read up on kiosk mode:

http://extragear.kde.org/apps/kiosktool/

I'd suggest creating your own config outside of $KDEDIR and then use
$KDEDIRS (note the trailing 'S') to place it before the $KDEDIR config
is used. That way when you upgrade most of your stuff doesn't have to be
changed.
