Thanks Otto.

In fact I had rebooted the server, but afterwards I configured the server as a NIS+ client, which copies nsswitch.nisplus to nsswitch.conf as part of the configuration process.  Editing the services section of the file as you suggested solved the problem.
Pleased it was something so simple, that I couldn't spot it :D

I saw that one of the ut services called utrcmd was not running so
I started it. The service was then placed into maintenance mode :(
The apache error_log says this:

[Tue Oct 25 09:58:34 2005] [error] [client 172.16.22.247] Premature
end of script headers: /var/opt/SUNWut/http/docroot/cgi-bin/admincgi
utrcmd: utrcmd/tcp: unknown service
utrcmd: utrcmd/tcp: unknown service

This, together with the "unknown service" reports in your earlier mail,
suggests that you haven't rebooted the system after installing SRSS. A
reboot is necessary to allow SRSS to reconfigure the system. Among other
things it needs to add entries to /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf, and
then (on S10) needs to run 'inetconv' to make the SMF-based 'inetd' aware
of those changes.

If you did already reboot then I'd start by checking /etc/nsswitch.conf
and making sure that the 'services' entry consults local files along with
(ideally before) any other repositories your site uses.
