Simon,

There is also an excellent blog on one of Sun's sites with lots of tips on how to reduce bandwidth and speed up the Sun Rays. I think if you do a search on "sun ray" blog gconftool you should get the page.

When I move a window to a new location I can see, very clearly, the screen redraw / update. Are there any known parametres I can fiddle with to improve the display responce.

If you don't have wireframe mode turned on for window moves then
that's the first thing to do. The JDS3 desktop in S10 groups
that setting with a couple of other tweaks intended to reduce
the amount of on-screen updates during common activities. The
relevant command is:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/metacity/general/reduced_resources true

There are some additional guidelines in Chapter 9 of the "Java Desktop System Release 3 Administration Guide" on docs.sun.com.
