Fitra,

Dual processor Xeon’s will not support 200 users. Windows 2003 server (32Bit) has a limitation of 200 users.   On a Sun V60 Dual Xeon we have ran 60 concurrent users, performance was good. We have been in the Sun Ray and Windows integration for almost 6 years. We have run the gambit of integration methods- Tarantella, Citrix, Rdesktop, and in the near future RDP. We provide training where the applications loads are quite heavy.  I was curious on your 2.4GHz Dual Opteron 850’s, what is your platform vendor. Also what is your RAM configuration? Here are a few of the configurations we currently run.

Four  V240’s (Solaris 9 SRSS 3.1/rdesktop) with Four V20’s 4GB RAM (Win2k3) 200 users. This configuration is purely a CAM serving out Windows desktops. V240’s setup for failover. This is a cross campus 255.255.255.224 subneted for 7 buildings, and tunneled through encryption devices. The 7 buildings are BOOTP relayed to the V240’s

Two V440’s (Solaris 9 SRSS 3.1/Solaris and rdesktop) Two V20’s 4GB RAM (64Bit Win23K) 250-300 users (Time Share Model) This is a Smart card CAM windows mode. This is a two building running dedicated Sun Ray interconnects with failover.

Three V490’s (Solaris 9 SRSS 3.1/ rdesktop) Three V40’s 16 GB (64Bit Win23K) 400 users.  This is in one building running dedicated Sun Ray interconnects with failover.

As you can see we overkill on our failover and sizing. We only run Solaris/ SPARC based system for SRSS stability. We have switched all our Windows Servers to Sun Opteron 64 bit systems. We have found that the DELL and HP hardware simply are not stable enough for our environment, and can’t compare in availability, performance and scalability. The new X4100 64 bit servers are the fastest Servers we have seen, and we are going to migrate to dual core on our Life Cycle Replacement.  And for those of you who need more horsepower for terminal services, switch to Windows 2003 X64 Bit. It will scale users 3x.

And No I do not work for Sun….

Thanks

David Partington

Subject: [SunRay-Users] Sizing windows terminal server vs sun ray server

Guys,
I try to purpose sun ray connected to windows terminal server.
What suprising me is 1 windows terminal server 2 proc Xeon 2.4 GHz can handle 200 concurent users. But our sun ray server 2 proc opteron 850 only handle 80 concurent users (count as light user). Our sun ray server only used as gateway but the windows terminal server used as processing process. It is very strange right, especially to make justification to customer.
Any idea?

Thanks& regards,
Fitra
