Can you be more specific regards to your terms here:
"programming for the Sun Ray"
"hardware mode"
"software mode"

Are you asking as an end user, or just curious regarding
what the Sun developers do?

To cut to the chase: In general, other than Sun developers
writing firmware, nobody does anything special
to "program for" a Sun Ray.
