This is only true for DVD drives, since their 1x writing speed is about
1500 kb/s and that's slightly to fast for USB 1.1 connected devices.
I've managed to burn CD's with cdrecord, although the speed is limited,
too. You need to be root to do this (at least with Solaris 9) - simply
use the appropriate raw disk device $UTDEVROOT/dev/rdsk/disk?s2

It would be interesting to see if the USB 2.0 ports from SR2 FS could be
used for writing DVD's.
