I presently have four Sun Ray 150 units which all have dead ethernet
ports, as the result of lightning taking out the switch they were
connected to. The DTUs otherwise power up just fine, but fail to
establish a link on their ethernet ports.
Now, they are all out of warrenty, and I'd like to see if there is any
way I could fix them. (before buying replacements) These are personal
units, and I'm not afraid to open them up and heat up my soldering iron.
I'd like to know if anyone knows what component(s) may be dead, and
whether they are easy enough to find/replace. One theory I've heard is
that it is most likely the "Pulse" ethernet output transformer brick
(well, the surface-mount equivalent of a brick, hehe). However, it is
all speculation at this point.
So, might anyone have any ideas/advice on trying to fix these, before I
start looking for replacements?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Derek,
most probably is the pulse transformer. If that is not the case, then
repair will be too costly to perform... So I hope the transformer burn,
saving other components. Usually, if there is more damage, it's clearly
visible on the board.

Well, last night I ordered some replacements for that pulse transformer
brick, so hopefully I'll try swapping one when they arrive. I just hope
it isn't too difficult to get the soldering iron in there (also ordered a
hopefully better tip), given that there is a not-easily-removed shield not
far from that component.
