Hi,
Indeed, the bonobo errors come up on the other servers as well. I did
start by cleaning out /tmp and /var/tmp - that's all I've ever had to do
on a Linux system running Gnome.
I can't tell whether gnome-session hangs before it calls metacity, or if
metacity is crashing; I trussed gnome-session and gconfd as soon as I
could after the terminal connected, but essentially they are just sleeping.
Usually, even when the startup of gnome-session is somehow hanging, you
get something on the Sun Ray (black screen with icon or timer on it), so
I'd imagine it's hanging pretty early in the process. One thing you
could check is whether you can communicate with the gconfd by getting a
prompt as the user whose session is blocked and running gconftool-2 -g
/something which would block if the gconfd is itself not responding. I
doubt it though, as most cases when gconfd is stuck or has crashed end
up in the situation I described above.
You could also replace the gnome-session startup command in
/usr/dt/config/Xinitrc.jds to truss that process too if you want to
monitor it from its start.
